It Started With My Own Skin
Hi, I’m Ashley, the founder of Smiles & Joys.
I’ve struggled with eczema for as long as I can remember.
Since childhood, I tried almost everything—steroid creams, moisturizers, lotions, ointments, and countless products promising relief. Some helped temporarily, while others barely made a difference.
But I could never find something gentle and effective that I felt comfortable relying on as part of my everyday routine.
Eventually, I thought this was something I would have to live with forever.
That changed during my first trip to Japan about 10 years ago.
An Unexpected Discovery
I was in my early 40s when, a few days into my trip, I experienced one of my worst eczema flare-ups.
One afternoon, while exploring a local market street, I wandered into a small shop filled with dried herbs, roots, and traditional ingredients.
An elderly woman working inside noticed the red eczema patches on my skin.
She spoke basic English and explained that traditional herbal ingredients had been used throughout East Asia for generations to soothe eczema and psoriasis skin.
After years of trying different products, I was skeptical. But I was also desperate for relief.
She selected five herbal ingredients and prepared them into a simple herbal paste for me.
I began applying it to my skin.
Over the next two weeks, I was amazed by how soothing it felt and how much better my skin began to look and feel.
It made me wonder:
Why had I never explored this approach before?
From Herbal Paste to Herbal Cream
When I returned home, I wanted to continue using those herbs.
But there was a problem.
Preparing a herbal paste every day was messy and inconvenient, and consistently sourcing the right ingredients wasn't easy.
That's when I had an idea.
What if I could take the wisdom behind these East Asian herbs and turn it into a convenient cream for everyday use?
Over the next 3 years, I worked with the Japanese woman I had met earlier, who is experienced in herbal formulation, and collaborated with a dermatologist to refine the idea.
We experimented with the texture, consistency, absorption, and balance of ingredients until we created something I was proud to share. It took a lot of time and effort, but in the end, it was completely worth it.
That became the foundation of the Smiles & Joys East Asia Herbal Formula.
Five Herbs. One Unique Formula.
At its core is a carefully selected blend of five ingredients inspired by traditional East Asian herbal practices: Stemona Sessilifolia Root, Sophora Flavescens Root, Cnidium Monnieri Fruit, Borneol, and Menthol.
Most of the ingredients are sourced from mountainous regions across East Asia. The cream is produced in carefully controlled batches with a focus on consistency and quality.

Why Smiles & Joys Exists
At first, we shared the cream with a small group of people.
Then the messages started coming in.
People struggling with eczema and psoriasis began telling us about their experiences with the cream. Their feedback encouraged us to make it available to more people.
And that is how Smiles & Joys began.
What began as my own lifelong struggle with eczema and an unexpected discovery thousands of miles from home eventually became something much bigger:
